Current status of UDDTs in Nyanza region
prepared by Wycliffe Osumba
Summary of site follow- up
During this time it was clearly indicating that most households were using the Ecosan toilet in the areas were mobilization was well done, but where mobilized was not properly done, the people were not using them well, maintenance was poor, roles how to clean the units was a problems, usage of the end products, is still hanging and some few individuals turned the units as store where they keep other things.
Institution where construct implemented had a big problems, that need time to addressed them. Most of the UDDT’s were not well finished, and I can say they are under construction , painting, fitting of gutters, urine pipe, water Tank, keying, outside supper structures and the urine door were not well fitted.
Floor screeding was poorly done, fixing the squatting pan was not well fitted, some stairs were too steep, front doors some broken, back door steels were not well fitted and lack of proper training to the communities or parents for common understanding, and out of this understanding they could be able to sustain the project or continue to won it.
It ‘ s my opinion that time frame for the pending work need to be extend and the materials that are missing need to be to avoid while elephant project in the filed.
Visited schools during contract period from June-Nov.2010
(for some schools trainings on proper operation, maintenance and reuse of urine and faeces in agriculture were performed - more details in next post from Wycliffe)

It is hope that there are still many things pending that need more follow-ups, training, and need more stakeholders to be involved in order to generates a supportive policy, frame work, informed civil servants and decision makers .Working in collaboration with other NGOS /CBDS I hope to play a prominent role in promotion, awareness, hygiene education.
